The gift of luck New Year coin 2014

The 2014 New Year Coin will be released on December 4, 2013 and celebrates some of the typical customs that the people of Austria perform to ensure the new year brings good luck. Bleigiessen is the melting of lead into shapes whose meaning is interpreted much like the shapes made by tea leaves.

The gift of luck New Year coin 2014

As a people rich in folklore, Austrians bring in the New Year by indulging in some of their most charming customs. As well as for giving gifts, it is a time for ensuring that the year to come will bring good luck and that the harshness of winter needs to be put on hold. The giving of a silver coin at the turn of the year is itself a time-honored tradition in many countries.

The reverse of the coin features someone cracking the whip (known as «Neujahrsschnalzen”) to banish the cold and bad spirits of the dark of winter. The person cracking the whip often wears an elaborate sun mask, seen over his left shoulder, hoping that the warmth of the sun will soon return. Also on the reverse are popular symbols of good luck and fortune: four leaf clovers, horseshoes, pigs and lucky white-spotted red capped mushrooms. The four-leaf clover is being poured from a source of molten lead, which is a custom known as «Bleigiessen” (lead pouring,) that is done at many events and homes, the various resulting shapes are interpreted much like the reading of tea leaves. Delicate snowflakes complete the design in this side.

Gladiator $10 Fiji 2013

Gladiator $10 Fiji 2013

Immortalising the «heroes of the Arena» in Ancient Rome comes this superbly struck, antique-finished tribute to the Gladiator!

There were many different types of gladiator in ancient Rome. Some of the first gladiators had been prisoners of war, and so some of the earliest types of gladiators used their native weapons and armor.

Different gladiators specialized in different weapons, and it was usual to pair off combatants with widely different, but more or less equivalent, equipment.

This marvelous silver coin shows the «provocator», one of the most popular types of gladiators, well struck together with an antique finish to create a greater depth in the design. Behind the Gladiator is the Roman Colosseum, and above that is a splash of colour signifying the fury the battles within the Colosseum generate. On the obverse is the country and year of issue, together with the Fiji coat of arms and the coin denomination.
