The Seven Sacred Teachings: Courage

The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled the third of seven coins in a series Honoring teachings of the First Nations people of Canada, which are Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth. It's an outstanding collection of Aboriginal wisdom and art.

The bear is one of seven animals featured in the Seven Sacred Teachings practiced by Aboriginal people throughout North America for living a full and happy life. The bear's lesson is courage; the ability to overcome fear, to fight for what is right, and knowing when it is best to yield. When we face difficult challenges, the bear will support us and guide us towards the wisdom and strength of our inner warrior.

The Seven Sacred Teachings: Courage

There is a time for everything; a time to yield and a time to fight. The bear teaches this well when it sets aside its shy and solitary nature to reveal its inner strength. A mother bear defending her cubs is unstoppable; she is ferocious and will fight to the end. She does this because she knows it is right. It takes courage to stand up despite the fear. Such strength is not only physical, but mental and moral as well. Every person faces challenges that need the support and guidance of the courageous bear.

Coin was designed by Canadian Métis artist Nathalie Bertin who has created a powerful image of a great bear standing behind an abstract warrior figure. The bear's head is lowered because there is no need for an outward display of strength; everyone knows the bear's power. The bear is the warrior's mentor and guide; a source of wisdom and courage to fight when necessary. The background pattern of sweetgrass reinforces the bear's teachings. Sweetgrass is considered the hair of Mother Earth and is therefore braided.

Aotearoa New Zealand Silver Proof Coin Set

Aotearoa New Zealand Silver Proof Coin Set

It was recently discovered that the names of New Zealand’s two main islands had come about simply through common usage, rather than official declaration. Both English and Māori names for the islands were made official in October 2013, the North Island (Te Ika-A-Maui) and the South Island (Te Waiponamu).

The design of each coin in this unique set features a highly detailed three-dimensional map that has been laser engraved from a real cartographic image. Such detail has never been seen before on a New Zealand coin, and is sure to impress any collector.

Cowboy in the Canadian Rockies

This coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s beloved O Canada series that focuses on iconic Canadian images: this coin pays tribute to the cowboy in the Canadian Rockies.

This coin, struck in a half-ounce of pure silver, pays tribute to the long-standing cowboy culture of Western Canada. These modern-day cowboys come from a long line of cattle ranchers, and recently have been engaged in a struggle to protect their heritage as the divide between urban and rural life in Alberta looms to challenge cattle ranching traditions.

Cowboy in the Canadian Rockies

The reverse design of this coin features an image by Canadian artist Bernie Brown, and depicts a Canadian cowboy on horseback, leading a second horse through the Canadian Rockies. The second horse appears to be carrying a load of provisions, likely en route to a back-country adventure. The landscape around them boasts the jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies, which stretch high into the sky. A variety of engraving techniques and finishes have been used to bring this rendering to life, while a clean proof finish completes the coin.  An affordable, unique addition to any collection of Canadiana-themed fine silver, or perfect as a gift for any cowboy you know.

100th Anniversary of the Declaration of the First World War

100th Anniversary of the Declaration of the First World War

During the First World War, the final view that tens of thousands of soldiers had after leaving port in the city of Québec was the soaring cliffs of the Gaspe Peninsula. A similar sight awaited those who departed from Halifax (Nova Scotia); they too would watch Canada’s rugged coastline disappear behind the horizon.

Britain had declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914, and by October, the largest convoy Canada had ever seen was on its way. This coin captures the scene that played out on countless ships as they headed to sea. Its design lures the viewer in to experience firsthand a scene that touches the heart as much today as it did 100 years ago.

A commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the First World War – an international conflict which would set the scene for countless stories of tragedy, courage and triumph. These helped shape Canada’s international reputation, and would ultimately result in its coming of age as a nation.

The design commemorates the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the First World War. The reverse image is an emotional tribute to those who left their homeland–and their loved ones–to serve as part of the First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

This coin captures a poignant moment as a departing soldier takes one last look at the Canadian coastline. It is October 1914 and the SS Megantic is among the ships transporting the first Canadian troops to British soil in the early days of the First World War. One soldier is leaning against the stern’s guard rail, his back momentarily turned on his shipmates who have gathered on the deck. With the Canadian Red Ensign softly flapping in the breeze overhead, the soldier takes a long look at the soaring cliffs of the Gaspe Peninsula as the ship brings him closer to the battles that surely lie ahead.

Sadly, this sight would prove to be the last glimpse of Canada for many of its brave soldiers, whose personal sacrifices during the war would do much to shape the nation.

Boer War – Australia at War Series

As a testimony to colonial Australians’ loyalty to the British motherland, the Royal Australian Mint presents this tribute to those who served in the Boer War, defending the lives and honour of British subjects in South Africa. As a symbol of history, commitment, tradition and pride, this coin is a welcome addition to the Australia at War series.

Boer War – Australia at War Series

Australia supported the British counter-offensive from 1900-1902, seizing major Boer towns, and forcing the Boers into small pockets of resistance. Overwhelmingly, Boer guerrillas were outnumbered and conquered by Australian troops. The coloured stripes featured on the packaging and coin are representative of the ribbon colours on the medal given out during this time.

Two of The Royal Mint’s talented engravers, Laura Clancy and Glyn Davies, have captured these familiar sights with a new perspective. Their designs have an impressionistic feel, depicting the icons through the eyes of the visitor, obscured by the everyday – weather, crowds or location.

These stunning silver Proof coins have been colour-printed using trichromatic techniques to enhance the designs, highlighting wet-weather scenes or adding the touch of sunshine to a statue.

The four crown-sized coins – larger than any circulating coin with an impressive diameter of over 36 millimetres – are presented and protected in an elegant Royal Mint case. A stylishly designed booklet reveals the hidden story and interesting facts about each icon and reveals the designers’ inspirations. Unlike other mementoes these coins are official UK coins (confirmed by a Certificate of Authenticity) and make the perfect gift for those with in interest in Britain’s culture, history and architectural design or a great addition to any collection.
