Latvijas Banka issues the very first 2 euro coin of special design "Riga – European Capital of Culture 2014". It is legal tender in the Republic of Latvia and the other euro area countries. The coins will be put into circulation just like other circulation money, via banks going to traditional points of coin sale and population. The cashier offices of Latvijas Banka in Riga, Daugavpils and Liepāja will commence selling the coin on Tuesday, 12 August.

The graphic design of the coin has been created by Henrihs Vorkals, and Jānis Strupulis is the author of the plaster model. The new 2 euro coin has been struck by Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg in Germany, the same mint commissioned to strike Latvia's euro circulation coinage.

Highly symbolic in national terms is the fact that the very first 2 euro coin of special design commemorates Riga, European Capital of Culture of 2014. The activities related to the event present a new quality vision of the capital city and Latvia's affinity with Europe and the common cultural values. By issuing this coin of special design Latvijas Banka has made an important contribution to the popularisation of the event in Latvia and abroad.

The reverse shows the skyline of Riga, with inscriptions "RĪGA – 2014" and "LV" underneath. At the top of the image there is a semi-circled inscription "EIROPAS KULTŪRAS GALVASPILSĒTA" (European Capital of Culture). The coin's outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

The obverse carries the number "2" and the inscription "EURO", with a geographical image of Europe in the background.

Medal History of Warcraft – the Assassination in Sarajevo

Wars have accompanied humankind since time immemorial, just the reasons, for which they are waged, change; most often they are political, religious, ideological or economical. Most of these conflicts bring principal historical changes and cause immense human suffering. Czech Mint prepared collector series History of Warcraft that commemorates major milestones of the past in an artistic form. As the first item in the series, the mint presents – in pure gold – an event which due to a coincidence changed the destiny of the entire Europe – the assassination in Sarajevo.

This year, one hundred years have passed since the moment when Franz Ferdinand d’Este, the heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne and emperor’s nephew, and his wife Sophie Chotek arrived to Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. They did not suspect it would be their last journey. The Serbian conspirators, primarily the radical ones, decided to remove the successor. However, their repeated attempts to do so failed and by coincidence, young Gavrilo Princip unexpectedly got the opportunity when the car with the successor turned by mistake into another street than planned. He did not hesitate and shot twice from the distance of one and a half metre. With the first shot he killed Ferdinand, with the other he shot dead his wife who instinctively covered her husband’s body. In several seconds he thus gave Austria an impulse to declare war on Serbia. It developed into a world conflict that resulted in sixteen million dead. Gavrilo Princip was caught and sentenced to twenty years in jail because by law he was too young for the death penalty. However, he was never released, after four years he died of exhaustion in the Terezín fortress.

Medal History of Warcraft – the Assassination in Sarajevo

The design of the unique medal was created by academic painter Karel Zeman, real master in his field. His attractive depiction of the assassination scene on the reverse as well as the effigies of Franz Ferdinand and his wife on the obverse lent the medal high aesthetic value. The first of the exceptional series – gold one-ounce medals History of Warcraft – is a splendid work of art which bears high investment potential with grace.

Auberge d'Aragon

On 30 June 2014 the Central Bank of Malta will issue two numismatic coins, in gold and in silver, depicting the Auberge d’Aragon. This will be the fourth in the Central Bank of Malta’s series of numismatic coins featuring the Auberges of the Knights of St John.

The Auberge d’Aragon was built in the 1570s according to a plan designed by the Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar. It is the only one of the Auberges still standing as it was originally built in the 16th century. Following the departure of the Knights and the arrival of the British in Malta, in the early 19th century, the Auberge d’Aragon was used for military administration purposes. Around the middle of that century a Doric portico was added to the building to embellish its austere façade. With the departure of the British after Malta’s Independence in 1964 the building served as the office of the Prime Minister until 1972. Since then it has become the seat of various government ministries.

Auberge d'Aragon

The obverse of the coins shows the emblem of Malta with the year of issue. The reverse features the façade of the Auberge d’Aragon. Both coins were struck at the Royal Belgian Mint. They were designed and engraved by the Maltese artist, Noel Galea Bason.

A couple more Lunar goats put in an early appearence

Still very early, so still picking up steam, coins for the 2015 Lunar Year of the Goat, (also Ram or Sheep) are putting in an appearance with a little more regularity.

The coin we have here is from Zurich-based producer, International Coin House, whose recent output has included the well-recieved Aureus trio of coins. It’s the second coin in the series after the Lunar Horse coin released last year, and shares its predecessors trait of being shaped like the jead of the animal depicted. The goat has offered them the opportunity to do something a little less extreme and a little more coin-like than the 2014 piece. One of those coins you’ll love or hate, but people definitely warmed up to last years coin.

A couple more Lunar goats put in an early appearence

Obverse: carries a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by the inscriptions Elizabeth II, Niue Island, Ag 925 and 2015. To the far right is the denomination of 1 dollar. An image of the legendary ‘horn of plenty’ filled with fruit covers the rest of this side.

Reverse: depicts the head of a ram with a golden horn around which is the inscription ‘PLENTY YEAR OF THE GOAT’.
