An imposing, exclusive tribute to what has been described as ‘the greatest story of survival in the history of exploration’, this official legal tender coin pays homage to the centenary of the completion of the 1911–14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, led by one of Australia’s most celebrated explorers Sir Douglas Mawson (1882–1958).
A flan of this size gives the artist a broad canvas with which to work, and full advantage of the expansive dimensions has been taken in the creation of the 2014 $10 Mawson 5oz Silver Proof. Unusually for a coin from a Commonwealth country, this exclusive legal tender issue features not one but TWO UNIQUE DESIGNS! Bearing a sharply detailed portrayal of the young Mawson on the reverse, with the ship the Aurora in the background.
The obverse unites the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with a depiction of Mawson and his two fallen comrades, Ninnis and Mertz.

On 28 July 2014, Narodowy Bank Polski is putting into circulation the coin “Patriots 1944 Citizens 2014” with a face value of PLN 20.
In 2014, we shall celebrate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, an event holding a particular place in our history and memory. The heroism of those who stood up to fight for free and independent Poland on 1 August 1944 is an example of the highest test of patriotism. The attitude of the insurgents was unique – guided by solidarity, loyalty, and responsibility for the homeland, city, home, for others and for themselves. Today, after 70 years, we demonstrate our patriotism in a different way – in our daily civic attitude, by participating in social and political life, by working pro Res Publica. However, patriotism is still expressed by the same words, as relevant today as ever: responsibility, solidarity, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, care, cooperation, integrity. Its essence is the care for the common good. If we are able to cultivate and develop this attitude, then those who were apparently defeated have actually won.
The Patriots of 1944 were fighting for freedom with weapons in their hands. However, the Warsaw Uprising was not only a battle for each street and each house; it was also 63 days of free Poland. For two months, legal civilian and military authorities operated in Warsaw, as well as the legal judiciary, public order protection services and the fire department. The press of all political orientations was printed, the radio and the field post operated, and own postal stamps were issued (!). Hospitals, field canteens and soldier inns functioned. The Insurgent Republic had its own journalists, operators documenting the Uprising and its own film chronicle. “This state emerging from the underground in Warsaw is only four days old” – reported “Biuletyn Informacyjny” (Information Bulletin), the major daily of the Insurgent Warsaw on the fifth day of the Uprising – “… it is here, without waiting for an end to the fighting, in the fire of battles, directly on the front line – that the state and Polish social life is rapidly appearing from the underground”. And the “Rzeczpospolita Polska” (Republic of Poland), in its issue of 6 August 1944 wrote: “The population of Warsaw passes its exam with an excellent result, as usual … There is nobody who would avoid their civic obligations at such a historic moment for us as this”.
This is how, under extreme conditions, the real civic society was born, able to organise itself, imbued with responsibility and care for the Republic (a unique example of this attitude are the two Dzienniki Ustaw RP (Journals of Laws of the Republic of Poland) issued during the Uprising, laying the systemic foundations for the future Poland. The Patriots of 1944 became the citizens of 1944. The example of the Warsaw Uprising proves how strongly these two notions – patriot and citizen – are correlated.
This correlation is reflected by the words placed on the coin reverse: „PATRIOCI OBYWATELE” (Patriots Citizens) and „OBYWATELE PATRIOCI” (Citizens Patriots). This inscription was made by using letters in the style of the font from the “Information Bulletin”. The reference to the Warsaw Uprising is also visible in symbolic form – on the reverse the coin designer has placed the outline of the emblem derived from the famous poster “Long live the government of the Republic. Honour to the courageous Home Army”, dated 1 August 1944.
On the obverse, all Polish coins feature: face value, national emblem, legend: Rzeczpospolita Polska, year of issue.

The Kremnica Mint of Slovakia has recently released a new silver collector coin to recognize the conservation area of the Dubník opal mines.
The old opal mines of Dubník are located in eastern Slovakia. Until the discovery of the opal fields in Mexico and Australia in the 19th century, Dubník was the only site of opal mining in the world. The history of opal mining at the site can be traced back to the period of the Roman Empire, although the mines were most active between the period of 1845 to 1880 when they were leased to the Goldschmidt family of Vienna. Opal mining ended at the site in 1922 and since this time the mineworkings have become a wintering site for 16 species of bat, including Geoffroy’s bat. In 1964, the Dubník mines were classified as a conservation habitat and later a conservation area.
Many pieces of jewelry containing opals from Dubník are part of collections held by leading European and world museums. This includes Isabella’s neckclace, received by Isabella Jagiellon on the occasion of her marriage to the King of Hungary in 1859. This necklace is included within the design of the new coin.
The obverse features a portrayal of Isabella’s necklace, which is decorated with Dubník opals, against the background of the silhouette of a bat. The national emblem of the Slovak Republic appears below with the 2014 date. Inscriptions include SLOVENSKO and the denomination of 20 EURO.
The reverse design also carries the silhouette of a bat, which is set against the mine’s interior. At the bottom is the entrance to the Jozef tunnel. Inscriptions include NÁLEZISKO OPÁLOV (“opal field”) and DUBNÍCKE BANE (“Dubník mines”).
The edge of the coin contains the inscription OSOBITOSTI PRÍRODY SLOVENSKA (Special features of Slovak nature).

Commemorating the most infamous mutiny in maritime history, this official legal tender coin is a true collectable colossus.
A coin of this size gives the artist a broad canvas with which to work, and full advantage has been taken in the creation of the 2014 $10 Mutiny on the Bounty 5oz Silver Proof. Precisely finished in pure gold is distinguished by a sharply sculpted appreciation of the main protagonists of the saga – Lieutenant William Bligh, and his adversary, Fletcher Christian.
HMS Bounty, under the command of William Bligh, was sent to the Pacific Ocean to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to British possessions in the West Indies. That mission was never completed, due to a mutiny led by the acting Master, Fletcher Christian. This was the famous Mutiny on the Bounty. The Mutiny on the Bounty occurred on April 28, 1789. The mutiny was led by Fletcher Christian against the ship's captain, Lieutenant William Bligh. According to accounts, the sailors were attracted to the "idyllic" life and sexual opportunities afforded on the Pacific islanders of Tahiti. It has also been argued that they were motivated by Bligh's allegedly harsh treatment of them.
Reverse: three vignettes portray the story of the Mutiny on the Bounty:
• A gilded bust portrait of harsh taskmaster Captain William Bligh;
• Fletcher Christian in the rigging, cutlass in hand, sets the loyalists adrift in the ship's boat; and
• HMS Bounty herself, speeding away under full sail and leaving Captain Blight in its wake!
The legend "MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY" and the date "1789" define the theme.
Obverse: Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II, the date of issue and denomination also appear, while the legend 5 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity.
As confirmed by both the numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and the individual edge-numbering, the worldwide mintage of the 2014 $10 Mutiny on the Bounty 5oz Silver Proof has been set at a crazy 500!
