50 years of Shinkansen

50 years of Shinkansen

A commemorative coin of the series of oval coloured Smart coins commemorating significant milestones of world transport. 'Following the successful emissions commemorating the 100th anniversary of destruction of the Titanic liner and 130th anniversary of the first Orient Express fast train ride the Czech Mint now issues a commemorative coin reminding of the 50th anniversary of the first ride of the legendary Japanese fast train called Shinkanzen.

Japan can boast of a global primacy in being the first country in the world to complete building of a railway exclusively for fast trains. The project of separate railways for this type of transport was first developed in the 1950s. The result was a high-speed railway track connecting the two largest Japanese cities – Tokyo and Osaka. The first fast trains travelled along the track at the speed of up to 210 km/hr on 1 October 1964 and only three years later already reached the limit of 100 million transported passengers. At present the Shinkanzen network includes eight main lines and serves most of the Japanese archipelago.

The author of the oval silver coin reminding of the significant event of launch of operation of the Shinkanzen fast train route is the Jablonec artist Josef Oplištil, who is extremely successful in art competitions of the Czech National Bank. He has already designed or co-designed eleven commemorative coins for the Czech National Bank and currently works as a professional teacher and deputy headmaster of the local Professional Higher Education Institute.

The obverse side of the oval silver coin shows three types of the Shinkanzen trains (on the right - from our point of view - there is the historically first series 0 of 1964), a portrait of Queen Elizabeth and the inscription "Shinkanzen" in Japanese. The reverse side shows another four train types and the symbol of the Japanese nation - the rising Sun. Thanks to the colouring technology the motif of the rising Sun dominates the coin.

The following train types are shown on the obverse side of the coin (from left to right): Series E3, series 500, series 0.

50 years of Shinkansen

The reverse side shows the following train types (from left to right): Series 200, series N 700, series 500, series 300, series 700.

Enrich your collection with the unique silver coin of the Milestones of World Transport series – this year commemorating the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Japanese Shinkanzen fast trains.

Baby Atlantic Puffin

Baby Atlantic Puffin

The Royal Canadian Mint showcases Canada's young wildlife with a beautiful series of coins featuring baby animals, including this one featuring a young puffin (or chick). Second in a touching series of coins that depicts baby animals in their natural setting.

This beautiful coin features selective colouring that reproduces the young puffin's distinct features. In the background, the brilliant green of the grassy cliff tops contrasts with the red and white of the lighthouse that is perched near the cliff's edge.

Coin features a young puffin with its mother along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. A side profile of the chick allows for a full view of the soft, dark-coloured down that covers its head and back, along with its bright white chest and its webbed feet. The chick is nestled among the grasses and flowers where it awaits its meal; on the right, the adult puffin stands next to its offspring, its bill clasping the small fish that will provide nourishment for the chick. Selective colour enhances the young puffin's engraved features; in the background, the bright green of the grassy cliff tops stands in contrast with the red and white lighthouse.

The Atlantic puffin is one of Canada's most beloved seabirds! This colourful bird is a familiar sight along the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador, where it enjoys the distinction of being the province's official bird since 1992. The puffin might have wings but it is a horrible flier–its wings need to flap up to 400 beats per minute just to stay in the air! They're also known for crash-landing more often than not, and will easily knock over other puffins that might be standing in their landing path.

Baby Atlantic Puffin

In the water, they're strong swimmers! Their webbed feet act like rudders but remarkably, they can dive to a depth of 61 metres and can hold their breath for up to one minute underwater! A puffin will dive into the water to scoop out as many fish as it can in one take. It will usually grab an average of 10 fish at a time, but it's been known to net up to 60 in a single dive!

New Zealand Post kiks off five-year ‘Great war’ coin programme

The commemorations for the centenary of the First World War continue to pick up pace and the New Zealand Post is the latest coin issuer to announce their plans and the first releases under it. Unlike the New Zealand Mint whose coins carry Niue as the issuing state, the New Zealand Post is the official issuer of coins for New Zealand itself. They don’t actually strike any coins themselves, usually having them done by the Royal Dutch Mint, BH Mayer or in this case, by the Royal Australian Mint.

Part of a new five-year series of commemorative coins depicting the events and stories of the Great War, this first wave of three coins is available for pre-order now but not shipping until August. The one gold and two silver coins all carry completely different artwork, one of the silvers being coloured.

1914 For King and Empire

This ¼ oz gold proof coin portrays the beginning of New Zealand’s involvement overseas during the First World War, and shows the difficulty of families being separated by war.

Reverse shows a husband and wife in the foreground, as he is off on the great adventure to fight for King and Empire while his wife sadly, but proudly, sees him off. In the background the soldiers stand in front of the pyramids and the Sphinx of Egypt, which is where the first troops of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force had arrived for training. Palm fronds border the image, representing New Zealand’s first task in the war – capturing Samoa from the Germans.

1914 The announcement of war

1914 The mounted rifes brigade

This highly collectable continuity set highlights New Zealand’s involvement in the war from beginning to end, and comes with a premium pressed metal tin to store all five coins, styled after the tins the soldiers would receive after enlisting.

Reverse: The first coin depicts the Mounted Rifles Brigade, a major element of New Zealand’s effort in the First World War. The horses offered superior mobility and allowed soldiers to move quickly over short distances. The Mounted Rifles Brigade trained with their horses in New Zealand before making the long journey to Egypt via ship in 1914. These men served largely in the Middle Eastern theatre, particularly Sinai and Palestine, forming strong bonds with their horses, which is portrayed on this 1oz silver proof coin.

The Sun Shines Bright on this Louis XIV Coin

This 2014 France 200 Euro Gold Antique Finish coin features a bust of Louis XIV on the obverse and a sun on the reverse showing the face of a man with rays streaming out, celebrating Louis XIV as the Sun King.

It's part of the From Clovis to the Republic, 1500 Years of French History series from the Paris Mint. Each coin in the series is struck without a collar, giving it the appearance of a coin struck hundreds of years ago. The unique Antique finish adds to the mystique.

The Sun Shines Bright on this Louis XIV Coin

Louis XIV (1638–1715), also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, came to power on 14 May 1643. His 72-year reign was one of the longest in European history. He required obedience at all levels of society and created a centralized state, which allowed him to protect his kingdom. Louis XIV left behind him an influential France, as is attested to by the building of the Palace of Versailles.

The obverse shows a portrait of Louis XIV wearing a long wig (in the 17th-century style) in Christian Lacroix’s characteristic style. The Sun, Louis XIV’s emblem, is accompanied on the reverse by the dates of his reign: 1643 – 1715.

Maple Canopy: Autumn Allure

Maple Canopy: Autumn Allure

This stunning one ounce, fine silver coin is the fourth and final in the popular Maple Canopy series from the Royal Canadian Mint.

Autumn is one of Canada's most beautiful seasons that transform the landscape into a magnificent panorama of colour. It's a spectacle of yellow, orange and gold that lures people into the forests to experience nature's artistry firsthand, and one of the best ways to view the canvas is to stand among the trees, looking up.

Coin is a breathtaking design of maple trees in their autumn splendor. The dynamic and unexpected viewpoint begins at the base of three trees and leads the eye upwards towards the magnificent canopies which are beautifully enhanced in vivid hues of orange, yellow and gold. A branch in the foreground provides the added perspective to bring the maple leaf's distinctive shape into view. The illustration by artist Emily Damstra.

1914 The announcement of war

This ¼ oz gold proof coin portrays the beginning of New Zealand’s involvement overseas during the First World War, and shows the difficulty of families being separated by war.

Reverse: This 1oz silver proof coin portrays the official announcement of New Zealand’s declaration of war. When Great Britain declared war on Germany, New Zealand was drawn into the fray by virtue of still being a part of the British Empire. The design shows the announcement of war by the Governor on the steps of the General Assembly Library, now known as the Parliamentary Library, as Parliament had burned down in 1907. The foreground features an eager paperboy selling the day’s big headline – war had been declared.
