The coin Bydgoszcz Canal

The coin Bydgoszcz Canal

The coin Bydgoszcz Canal

The series of commemorative coins “Discover Poland”, issued by the National Bank of Poland, was extended by a consecutive coin. This time the reverse of a 5-zloty token features an exceptional monument of hydraulic engineering – the Bydgoszcz Canal.

The Bydgoszcz Canal was built in the 70s of the XVIII century. In XIX century, this unique architectural monument of hydraulic engineering became an important communication and trade route. Not once in its history it has been a subject to modernization. At the turn of the XVIII and XIX century its structure was enhanced with brick locks. As a result of 1915’ reconstruction, the Canal changed its course. Nowadays, the old section of the monument with its five locks and a beautiful park is used mainly for recreation. As time went by, the importance of the Bydgoszcz Canal in communication and trade was declining. However, the fact is that it has indelibly changed the landscape of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Its picturesque surroundings are a popular meeting place not only for the inhabitants of the city of Bydgoszcz, but also for Polish and foreign tourists.

Obverse:
In the central part of the coin – image of the coat of arms eagle established as the national emblem of the Republic of Poland. Below it – mint mark: m/w, year of issue: 2015. Along the rim on a separate ring – face value: 5 ZŁOTYCH (5 zloty), issuing country: RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA (the Republic of Poland).

Reverse:
In the central part of the coin – image of three granaries, picturesquely located on the Brda River in the center of Bydgoszcz. Along the rim on a separate cupronickel ring – name of the coin: KANAŁ BYDGOSKI. In the bottom part of the ring – decorative elements: lines resembling river waves. River banks engraved on the reverse go beyond the center of the coin, simultaneously extending the perspective of the landscape to the ring.
