Gymnastics is one of the most traditional and popular sports in Finland
Various sports began to gain a wider foothold in Finland towards the end of the 19th century. At that time, gymnastics was one of the most popular sports alongside shooting, sailing, skating and skiing.
In Finland, gymnastics is practised at both recreational and competitive levels. Finland has achieved a total of 25 Olympic medals in the sport: 8 gold, 5 silver and 12 bronze. The most recent medal was the silver won by Olli Laiho in 1968. The most recent international medals won by Finnish gymnasts are the horizontal bar world championship of Jani Tanskanen from 1997, the horizontal bar silver medal of Jari Mönkkönen from the European Championships of 1998 and Tomi Tuuha's European championship in vault in 2010.
The official competitive disciplines currently recognised by the Finnish Gymnastics Federation are artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, aesthetic group gymnastics, aerobic gymnastics, TeamGym, trampolining and acrobatic gymnastics. All forms of gymnastics are constantly increasing in popularity in Finland, with the number of amateur gymnasts estimated at 600,000, of which approximately 150,000 are active in sports clubs.
A major demonstration and performance gymnastics event, the 15th World Gymnaestrada, will be held in Helsinki in July 2015.
