Collector coins preserve their lustre best in proof quality. Order Gymnastics, the opening coin in the Sports Coins series, for your collection, as a memento or to give as a gift. The proof-quality Gymnastics coin is packaged in a new kind of cardboard packaging with a fresh look.

This coin minted to celebrate gymnastics is most beautiful in proof quality. Proof-quality collector coins are minted with a polished die, finished, and placed in a protective clear plastic casing set in a new kind of cardboard package.

The coin will best withstand the test of time and remain as a memento in your collection in its original package.

This sports coin with a nominal value of five euros depicts gymnastics. The obverse features key elements of the sport, such as a beam, the legs of a gymnast and a gymnastic ribbon. The collector coin's reverse depicts the curve of an athletics stadium, complete with tracks and cheering crowds. All coins in the series will share the same reverse.

This beautiful collector coin is part of the new Sports Coins series, which Mint of Finland will release by decree of the Ministry of Finance in 2015–2016. A total of nine coins paying tribute to different sports are slated for release in the series, with Gymnastics, Basketball, Figure Skating and Volleyball to be launched in 2015 and Ice-Hockey, Skiing, Football, Athletics and Ski Jump in 2016.

Gymnastics is one of the most traditional and popular sports in Finland

Various sports began to gain a wider foothold in Finland towards the end of the 19th century. At that time, gymnastics was one of the most popular sports alongside shooting, sailing, skating and skiing.

In Finland, gymnastics is practised at both recreational and competitive levels. Finland has achieved a total of 25 Olympic medals in the sport: 8 gold, 5 silver and 12 bronze. The most recent medal was the silver won by Olli Laiho in 1968. The most recent international medals won by Finnish gymnasts are the horizontal bar world championship of Jani Tanskanen from 1997, the horizontal bar silver medal of Jari Mönkkönen from the European Championships of 1998 and Tomi Tuuha's European championship in vault in 2010.

The official competitive disciplines currently recognised by the Finnish Gymnastics Federation are artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, aesthetic group gymnastics, aerobic gymnastics, TeamGym, trampolining and acrobatic gymnastics.  All forms of gymnastics are constantly increasing in popularity in Finland, with the number of amateur gymnasts estimated at 600,000, of which approximately 150,000 are active in sports clubs.

A major demonstration and performance gymnastics event, the 15th World Gymnaestrada, will be held in Helsinki in July 2015.
