The Government of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands have issued two new coins which feature one of the region’s more elusive sea mammals, that of the Spectacled porpoise. A rarely seen member of the porpoise family, they are believed to be found around the cool sub-Antarctic waters and have been seen off South Georgia in the Atlantic. It is therefore fitting that this amazing new coin is being issued on behalf of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands.
The species is easily distinguished from other porpoises by a characteristic dark ring around the eyes which is commonly surrounded by a further light ring giving the indication of spectacles – hence, the animals’ very descriptive name. The Spectacled Porpoise has distinctive black and white markings – black above and white underneath – with a white stripe on the upper surface of the tail. They are fast, active swimmers and normally avoid boats, which is why so little is known about this particular species. The total population is also unknown and therefore they are listed as a Threatened Species.
The coin, struck by the Pobjoy Mint, UK, is issued in both sterling silver and cupro-nickel and share the same design. The reverse features a beautiful Spectacled Porpoise in the foreground with a mother and her calf in the background. The coin’s face value of “TWO POUNDS” is placed just under the primary design along the lower rim. The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, this finely detailed coin offers a unique first-person perspective of the peril faced by Canadian soldiers during their landing at Juno Beach. The detailed design serves as a heartfelt tribute to the Canadian veterans of the Second World War, and their enduring legacy of service and sacrifice in Normandy and beyond.
This coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy – an important offensive that allowed Allied forces to establish a foothold in Western Europe and open up another battlefront, thus paving the way to Allied victory.
Typically the obverse of your coin features the reigning monarch, this coin features a rare effigy of the reigning monarch during the Second World War, King George VI.
June 6, 1944 – forever known as D-Day – new coin reverse transports you back in time with a unique first-person perspective that immerses you in the midst of the action. Canadian infantry soldiers are seen in full battle gear as they disembark from a Landing Craft Assault (LCA) vehicle and make their way to what’s become known as Juno Beach. In the foreground, one soldier looks on while another at left looks back at the viewer, who is about to follow the others into the low Atlantic tide. The precariously angled horizon in the background recreates the rough sea conditions, as the transport vehicle and its occupants are tossed about by tall waves just off the shores of Normandy.

One kilo gold and silver coins from the Royal Canadian Mint commemorate the bicentennial of one of the bloodiest battles in the War of 1812. New for collectors are the 2014 Battle of Lundy’s Lane One Kilogram Gold Coin and 2014 Battle of Lundy’s Lane One Kilogram Silver Coin.
Both large strikes feature reverse designs depicting a scene from that battle, and each have extremely limited mintages with just 10 gold coins issued and only 400 of the silver coins authorized.
«The Battle of Lundy’s Lane was one of the fiercest land battles of the War of 1812 – but also one of the deadliest ever fought on Canadian soil, with high casualties suffered on both sides.» describes the Royal Canadian Mint. «As American troops surged forward, the British troops – which included the Canadian militia and First Nations allies – fought together valiantly to hold their position and prevent the American troops from moving further north.»
The Battle of Lundy’s Lane was fought on July 25, 1814. It marked the last attempted invasion of Upper Canada by American forces.
Canadian artist Bonnie Ross created the design found on both gold and silver coins. American troops are seen advancing against British troops. Both forces have fixed bayonets, reinforcing the reality of the close combat during the engagement. Artillery also appears off in the distance.
Inscribed below the design are THE BATTLE OF LUNDY’S LANE, 1814–2014, and LA BATAILLE DE LUNDY’S LANE. Above, CANADA is shown.
Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of both issues. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 2014 and the legal tender face values of 2500 DOLLARS for the gold coin and 250 DOLLARS for the silver coin.

The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) is the designation for the Canadian forces that served overseas during the First World War. Far from their homeland, they helped build Canada's international reputation and contributed to Canada's coming of age as a nation. On the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the First World War, it is important to pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices made by those brave Canadians – lest we forget.
Did you know...
Your beautifully detailed design commemorates the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the First World War and pays tribute to the Canadian Expeditionary Force, whose valour in battle helped Canada forge a national identity and move towards greater autonomy.
In the background, a convoy of ships represent those who first delivered Canada to the war in 1914. The First World War was the last conflict to be uniquely defined by the foot soldier; therefore, the lone soldier in the foreground is particularly poignant. Already shaped by the battles of 1915, our soldier is kneeling with his right foot stretched past the circular image frame. He is pondering his journey as he looks out into the horizon where silhouettes of battle-weary soldiers march on in the distance – much as they did through to the final days of war in 1918. The Maple Leaf crest cap badge at the bottom of the image adds motifs linked to the CEF as a tribute to its contributions.

Narodowy Bank Polski and the Turkish State Mint, which has the right to issue coins in Turkey, have undertaken an initiative to issue two silver collector coins, Polish and Turkish, of face values of PLN 20 and TRY 50. Both coins are put into circulation on 26 June 2014 and are sold as a set. A joint certificate of authenticity of Narodowy Bank Polski and the Turkish State Mint is included with each set of coins.
The 600th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Turkey in 2014 is an opportunity to celebrate this event and recall the centuries-long mutual contacts between the two countries. In 1414 King Ladislas Jagiello sent two envoys to Sultan Mehmed .elebi – Skarbek from G.ra and Gregory the Armenian – on a mission to mediate between Hungary and Turkey. The mission was successful. This historical date is worth highlighting since Poland was the first European country to establish permanent diplomatic relations with the then Ottoman Empire.
For nearly 300 years – from the rule of Ladislas Jagiello to the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 – Polish- Turkish relations alternated between periods of war and peace. However, throughout the whole history of mutual relations, the periods of peace were significantly longer than the periods of war. Poles will always remain deeply grateful to Turkey for not recognising the partitions of Poland. What is widely known from those times is the ceremonial welcome of foreign envoys at the court of the Sultan – the chamberlain, who was to announce the arrival of the envoy of Poland, after a long time of waiting would declare: “The envoy of Poland has not arrived, he got stuck on the road”.
The 19th century began a new chapter in friendly relations between Poles and Turks. It was then that Turkey provided asylum for droves of political exiles and refugees seeking to escape the draft to the Russian army. The largest wave of emigration to Turkey coincides with the defeat of the January and November uprisings as well as the end of the Hungarian revolution of 1848-49. Thanks to their knowledge, military training and technical education, Poles became engaged in the modernisation of various spheres of Turkish life (one should mention here J.zef Bem, Marian Langiewicz, Władysław Kościelski, Władysław Zamoyski and Michał Czaykowski). This period of friendly Polish-Turkish relations that lasts to today has left a much stronger stamp in the social consciousness of Turks than the earlier period of conflict and wars.
On the obverse, all Polish coins feature: face value, national emblem, legend: Rzeczpospolita Polska, year of issue.
