From 1913 to 1916, two teams of scientists took part in an unprecedented exploration of the Arctic region that was known as the First Canadian Arctic Expedition. Long before this expedition, visual arts and storytelling had been used in Inuit communities to pass down knowledge from one generation to the other, and it’s a tradition that continues today – particularly in the artistic community of Cape Dorset.
Special features:
• Your striking silver proof 3-dollar coin commemorates the centennial of the First Canadian Arctic Expedition by bringing a contemporary perspective to life in the Arctic.
• Your coin’s design comes from Inuit artist Tim Pitsiulak, of Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut. Tim Pitsiulak is also the nephew of Kenojuak Ashevak, who was arguably the most famous Inuit artist in the world.
• Pitsiulak’s initials appear on your coin in Inuktitut.
Design:
Designed by renowned Inuit artist Tim Pitsiulak, your coin includes a beautifully detailed design that combines animal and human imagery. A traditional whaling boat and three kayaks wrap around the image along the rim to depict a traditional bowhead whale hunt. Two beluga whales swim alongside a bowhead whale – animals that have long been a source of inspiration to the artist. The bowhead is adorned with several elements drawn from the Inuit culture. To honour the Tuniit people who first crossed the Bering Strait from Siberia, Dorset ivory masks adorn the bowhead’s lower jaw and its back. A Thule ivory comb lies across the top of the whale’s head, representing the Inuit expansion across Canada. The pattern on the whale’s side mimics the walls of an igloo, while the amauti design that graces the whale’s tale symbolises the clothing worn by Inuit women.

The Royal Canadian Mint's Silver Maple Leaf will be getting a new look in 2014. A new finish formed of complex radial lines and a micro-engraved laser mark will become permanent additions to the Mint's flagship silver bullion coin.
“The Royal Canadian Mint is committed to delivering outstanding quality and value to its customers by constantly improving its products through innovation,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “After 25 years of producing the world’s purest and one of its most popular silver bullion coins, the Mint is pleased to offer investors even more value by incorporating technology which also makes our Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin a world leader in security.”
The traditional bullion finish on previous Silver Maple Leaf coins will be replaced with radial lines which emanate from the center of the coin. These lines have been precisely machined within microns on the master tooling to ensure consistent die production and coin striking. The specific width and pitch of the lines create a light diffracting pattern which is unique the "next generation" Silver Maple Leaf and unmatched by other bullion products.
A micro-engraved security mark has also been added to the reverse of the coin. A textured maple leaf incorporates the numeral "14" to denote the coin's year of issue and represents the cutting edge in bullion coin security. This technology was also added to the Mint's Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins starting in 2013, as well as its $1 and $2 circulation coins starting in 2012.
The 2014 Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins containing the new finish and laser mark will begin shipping throughout the Mint's network of official bullion distributors in December 2013. Soon thereafter, the coins will begin to be available from bullion dealers.

When palaeontologists working in the Bay of Fundy (Nova Scotia) uncovered teeth without a fossilized skeleton, they looked to other regions of the globe to find a match. Given that all the continents were connected during the Early Jurassic period, it is possible that a species from another continent could have roamed the landmass that is now Nova Scotia. The palaeontologists found their best possible match in Arizona (USA). Scutellosaurus (little shield lizard) was a small, ornithischian (bird-hipped) dinosaur, and this coin shows what it may have looked like according to current science—roughly one metre long with an extremely long tail and covered with small pieces of bony armour called “scutes.” Scutellosaurus’ teeth were positioned near the edge of its jaws, suggesting that it lacked well-developed cheeks to keep food in its mouth while chewing. Palaeontologists believe it was an early ancestor of armoured dinosaurs like ankylosaurs and stegosaurs.
Special features:
• Your coin is the second fine silver coin to feature a full, non-skeletal portrait of a dinosaur.
• Your coin features a finely engraved, life-like representations of this prehistoric creature discovered in Canada.
• Your coin features a proof finish and is beautifully enhanced by select finishes that highlight the textures of the dinosaurs body. Each ‘scute’ was individually polished to contrast the rest of the dinosaurs body!
• Your coin features the dinosaur’s latin name, Scutellosaurus, sunk into the coin as if carved into rock.
Design:
Your coin features an interpretation of what the Nova Scotian ornithischian (a small, bird-hipped dinosaur) may have looked like if similar to Scutellosaurus. The scientific accuracy of the depiction was verified by palaeontologists of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology.
