One kilo gold and silver coins from the Royal Canadian Mint commemorate the bicentennial of one of the bloodiest battles in the War of 1812. New for collectors are the 2014 Battle of Lundy’s Lane One Kilogram Gold Coin and 2014 Battle of Lundy’s Lane One Kilogram Silver Coin.
Both large strikes feature reverse designs depicting a scene from that battle, and each have extremely limited mintages with just 10 gold coins issued and only 400 of the silver coins authorized.
«The Battle of Lundy’s Lane was one of the fiercest land battles of the War of 1812 – but also one of the deadliest ever fought on Canadian soil, with high casualties suffered on both sides.» describes the Royal Canadian Mint. «As American troops surged forward, the British troops – which included the Canadian militia and First Nations allies – fought together valiantly to hold their position and prevent the American troops from moving further north.»
The Battle of Lundy’s Lane was fought on July 25, 1814. It marked the last attempted invasion of Upper Canada by American forces.
Canadian artist Bonnie Ross created the design found on both gold and silver coins. American troops are seen advancing against British troops. Both forces have fixed bayonets, reinforcing the reality of the close combat during the engagement. Artillery also appears off in the distance.
Inscribed below the design are THE BATTLE OF LUNDY’S LANE, 1814–2014, and LA BATAILLE DE LUNDY’S LANE. Above, CANADA is shown.
Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of both issues. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 2014 and the legal tender face values of 2500 DOLLARS for the gold coin and 250 DOLLARS for the silver coin.
