Isle of Man Coins Commemorate 70th Anniversary of D-Day

Isle of Man Coins Commemorate 70th Anniversary of D-Day

The Government & Treasury of the Isle of Man have launched (12th May) two new coins which remember the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the landing of allied forces onto the shores of France which was considered the turning point in the struggle to defeat Nazi Germany and Hitler’s occupation of much of the European continent. The Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II which consisted of armed forces from Canada, the Free French Forces, the United Kingdom, and the United States was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Planning for the operation began in 1943 but in the months leading up to the invasion, the Allies conducted a substantial military deception in an effort to mislead the Germans as to the date and location of the Allied landings which had long been anticipated by Axis forces.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower of the United States Army was appointed commander of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force and General Bernard Montgomery, affectionately known as “Monty” of the British Army was named as commander of the 21st Army Group, which comprised all of the land forces involved in the invasion.

12,000 planes of the Allied Air Forces cleared the Luftwaffe from the skies and photographed enemy defenses whilst the Allied Naval Forces patrolled the English Channel, patrolled the beaches and their defenses. On D-Day itself, the 6th June 1944 – and despite unfavorable weather conditions, more than 1,000 transports dropped paratroopers to secure the beaches. Amphibious craft landed over 130,000 troops on five beaches along the Normandy coast. British and Canadian forces landed on Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches whilst American troops landed on Utah and Omaha Beaches. In the weeks following the invasion, Polish forces also participated, as well as contingents from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Out of 156,000 fighting men, the allied armies suffered nearly 12,000 casualties with 4,414 confirmed fatalities. The five bridgeheads or landing points were not connected until the 12th June, by which time the Allies held a front of around 60 miles (97 km) long and 15 miles (24 km) deep. Caen, a major objective, was still in German hands at the end of D-Day and would not be completely captured until the 21st July. From this new front, the allied armies continued their push into Western Europe with a Soviet offensive on the Eastern front from Belorussia occurring on the 22nd June and resulting in the almost complete destruction of the German Army Group Centre. Within less than a year from the D-Day launch, the Third Reich of Hitler’s Nazi regime capitulated entirely and an unconditional surrender was accepted by the Allied command on the 7th May 1945.

The coins, with their stylized design and vivid color transfers are produced by the Pobjoy Mint, UK and depict Allied Troops storming a bunker on D-Day with signs naming the five landing beaches with a large ‘D’ to represent D-Day.  Also shown are several poppies, the symbol for those who gave their lives for their country.  The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.

50th Anniversary of Shinkansen “Bullet Train” Opening

50th Anniversary of Shinkansen “Bullet Train” Opening

The Finance Ministry of Japan have authorized the issue of a new coin to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s Shinkansen, or new trunk line of high speed trains which began service in 1964. Often referred to as the “bullet train” due to its shape, the Shinkansen catapulted public transport into the modern age and at a ground speed not before experienced. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen began service on the 1st October 1964, just in time for the Tokyo Olympics. The conventional Limited Express service took six hours and 40 minutes from Tokyo to Osaka, but the Shinkansen made the trip in just four hours, and then shortened to three hours and ten minutes by 1965. It enabled day trips between Tokyo and Osaka, the two largest metropolises in Japan.

With its speed of between 240–320 km/h or 150–200 mph, Shinkansen uses advanced technologies compared with conventional rail, and it achieved not only high speed but also a high standard of safety and comfort. Its success has influenced other railways in the world and the importance and advantage of high-speed rail has consequently been re-evaluated in many countries who have either adopted some elements of high-speed service or who are planning their rail service to incorporate the technology fully. The Shinkansen uses 1,435 mm (4 ft 812 in) standard gauge in contrast to the 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow gauge of older lines. Continuous welded rail and Swingnose crossing points are employed, eliminating gaps at turnouts and crossings. Long rails are used, joined by expansion joints to minimize gauge fluctuation due to thermal elongation and shrinkage. A combination of ballasted and slab track are used, with slab track exclusively employed on concrete bed sections such as viaducts and tunnels. Slab track is significantly more cost-effective in tunnel sections, since the lower track height reduces the cross-sectional area of the tunnel, thereby reducing construction costs by up to 30%. However, the smaller diameter of Shinkansen tunnels compared to some other high-speed lines has resulted in the issue of “tunnel boom” becoming a concern for residents living close to tunnel portals.

Fine Silver Hologram Coin — Green Darner Dragonfly

Fine Silver Hologram Coin — Green Darner Dragonfly

One of the loveliest, largest, and most widespread dragonfly species in Canada is Anax junius, commonly known as the Green Darner. Both males and females range in length between 70 and 80 millimetres and have a wingspan of 100 to 120 millimetres. The Green Darner's common name is rooted in its bright green body and long blue abdominal region marked with a black line along its entire length that looks much like a darning needle. The Green Darner has large green or brown eyes that join at the top of its head, extending the dragonfly's scope of vision to nearly 360 degrees. The area just in front of the conjoined eyes bears a distinctive dark "bull's-eye" marking.

Green darners are one of the few dragonfly species in North America known to be migratory. They travel south from many regions of Canada between late August and November, returning the following year between March and June to lay their eggs.

Like all dragonflies, green darners are amazing aerial hunters that can fly at incredible speeds. They use this speed and their unusual eyesight to catch prey on the wing. Their prey includes black flies, deer flies, mosquitoes, moths, butterflies, bees, and other insects. They are also entirely carnivorous in their nymph phase, feeding on aquatic insects, tadpoles, and fish eggs.

Fine Silver Hologram Coin — Green Darner Dragonfly

The second in the Royal Canadian Mint's exciting new "Dragonfly" series featuring painted Canadian dragonfly species set against hologram images of their natural habitat!

By holding the hologram at a 45 degree angle under the light, the dragonfly's habitat comes to life in dimensional detail —from the vegetation along the water's edge to the lily pads floating on the water's shimmering, reflective surface.

Designed by Canadian artist Celia Godkin your coin features a painted Anax junius set against a three-dimensional hologram. Rendered in finest detail, the dragonfly is presented from its right side. Its delicately veined transparent wings are fully extended as the green darner flies sprightly across a vegetation-lined pond. This presentation of the darner shows the viewer the large dragonfly's vast wingspan, beautiful emerald-green thorax, large green eyes, and characteristic head-top bulls-eye marking as well as its long blue "darning needle" abdomen. Its preferred summer breeding habitat is uniquely depicted in the hologram background; by capturing colour from light, this holographic image offers added dimensionality and movement to the reverse image. Tall vegetation lines the water's edge in the top portion of the background while below, nearby trees are reflected on the pond's mirror-like surface. In the centre, lily pads float on the shimmering water's surface — a welcome respite for the dragonfly on a warm summer day.

Anders Celsius

Anders Celsius

In 1742, Anders Celsius defined the temperature scale degree-centigrade which was later named after him. He fixed the boiling point of water at 0 degree and the freezing point at 100 degree. These fixpoints were switched later.• The Swedish physician, mathematician and astronomer was interested in mathematic since childhood.

His father Nils was a professor of astronomy. And even his grandfathers were scholars. Magnus Celsius was a mathematician und Anders Spole was an astronomer.

Celsius died at the age of only 42 in the middle of his work and only two years after fixing his temperature scale because of tuberculosis.

Doctor Who is currently the longest running and most successful science fiction television series of all time. Produced by the BBC, the programme follows the adventures of the last of the Time Lords – the Doctor.

An advanced race of reptilian humanoids, tribes of Homo Reptilia were the dominant life-form on Earth before the evolution of humanity. When a large object appeared in the sky the Silurians retreated underground or escaped Earth in an Ark which entered Earth’s orbit as the Moon. The Doctor has encountered three tribes of Silurians whose hibernation was disturbed by human activity.
