Coin St. Stephen's Basilica Budapest

New issue in the award winning series: Holy Windows. The first and unique painted window coin series in the world. Issue eight is dedicated to the St. Stephens Basilica in Budapest with a window painting of the first king of Hungary.

The Sacred Art series from Numiscollect powers on up to its eighth release featuring the magnificent St.Stephens Basilica in Budapest, Hungary. Released three per year on their debut in 2011 and into 2012, from 2013 the release schedule was dropped to just a single annual release.

The square, but diagonally orientated antique-finish coins, have inset within them a representation in glass of one of the famous stained-glass windows most associated with the subject of the coin. Placed centrally, the design just works, and while nominally in competition with CIT’s Tiffany series, this range stands on its own two feet as being collectable in their own right.

St. Stephen’s Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. Named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary, it’s currently the third largest church in Hungary and the most important one.

The architectural style is Neo-Classical; it has a Greek cross ground plan and the façade is anchored by two large bell towers. In the southern tower is Hungary’s biggest bell, the Great St. Stephen Bell, weighing over 9 tonnes and being 2.4m in diameter. Its predecessor had a weight of almost 8 tonnes, but it was used for military purposes during World War II, the new bell having been made by the Perner Bell Foundry in Passau, Germany in 1990. There are five others within the Basilica.
