The Perth Mint is pleased to release the latest design in the 2014 Land Down Under series.

Isolated locations, slippery and uneven surfaces, and the unpredictable nature of the ocean, make rock fishing the most dangerous sport in Australia.  Yet despite many reports which detail fishermen being swept to their untimely demise, the exhilaration of the pastime makes it an extremely popular activity across Australia and New Zealand.

Rock fishing involves fishing straight into the sea from a rocky outcrop or platform, submerged rocks, rock faces and rocks that emerge from the water’s edge. 

Each coin is struck from 1/4oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality.

The reverse of the coin depicts a fisherman and his son fishing from a rock platform. The inscriptions THE LAND DOWN UNDER and ROCK FISHING also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Issued as Australian legal tender, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2014 year-date, and the monetary denomination.

In 2015, we celebrate the eighth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar goat include 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015. Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be elegant, charming, artistic, gifted and calm.

Each coin is meticulously struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. The 2015 silver releases are available as individual 1oz and 1/2oz coins.

The reverse of each coin depicts a family of three coloured goats standing in a stylised rural scene. The Chinese character for ‘goat’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Goat’ also appear in the design, with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2015 year-date, and the monetary denomination are shown on each coin’s obverse.

The Year of the Goat 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Edition has an issue limit of 9,000 from a maximum mintage of 10,000, while the 1/2oz has a maximum mintage of 10,000. 

Each coin is housed in a stylish red and black display case and illustrated lunar-themed shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Traditionally, the coin bears a portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, its metal fineness, issuing country and year.

On the beautifully illustrated reverse, one can see two kingfishers, small blue and orange birds that live both in wetlands and woodlands throughout Europe and Asia. The vivid colors of their feathers seem to be blue, green and orange depending on the angle at which they are viewed. These birds feed mainly on fish, which they catch by perching on a branch overhanging the water, and plunging into the water when a prey appears within striking distance. The legends on the reverse include the series name and the bird’s names in Polish and Latin. The Treasury of Alderney has launched three new coins which celebrate the centenary of the birth of writer and poet Dylan Thomas (1914 – 1953). Popular both in his homeland of Wales and internationally, Dylan Thomas’ works have been performed and enjoyed for decades, and include the ‘play for voices’ Under Milk Wood, the haunting poem Do not go gentle into that good night and the popular tale A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

Meaning ‘son of the waves’, Dylan’s name originates from the Welsh mythical ‘Mabinogion’ tales, and there could be no more fitting a name for the tempestuous character. Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales, in 1914, and although an undistinguished pupil, he left school at 16, becoming a journalist for a short time. While many of his works appeared in print while he was still a teenager, it was the publication of “Light breaks where no sun shines”, in 1934, that caught the attention of the literary world. Although Thomas was appreciated as a popular poet in his lifetime, he found earning a living as a writer difficult, which resulted in his augmenting his income with reading tours and broadcasts. His radio recordings for the BBC during the latter half of the 1940s brought him to the public’s attention and he was used by the Corporation as a populist voice of the literary scene. Thomas traveled to America, where his readings brought him a level of fame. His time in America cemented Thomas’ legend, where he recorded to vinyl A Child’s Christmas in Wales. During his fourth trip to New York in 1953, Thomas became gravely ill and fell into a coma from which he did not recover. He died on the 9th November 1953 and his body was returned to Wales where he was buried at the village churchyard in Laugharne.

The coin is struck by the Royal Mint on behalf of the Treasury of Alderney and is designed by senior Royal Mint engraver Lee R. Jones who has captured his true persona with the instantly recognizable three quarter facing portrait of Dylan complete with his wild hair and wide eyes. Other touches, such as the ferns that recall the well-known poem Fern Hillwhich are delicately detailed on both sides of the portrait. His name “DYLAN THOMAS” is boldly positioned just above the portrait with the years of his birth and death on each side along the upper rim. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II as created by Ian Rank-Broadley and in use on British, British Isles and some commonwealth nations coinage since 1998.

St. Stephen's Basilica (Hungarian: Szent István-bazilika) is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary.

No other Austrian province is as resonant outside Austria as the Tyrol. Its famous feathered hats are partly responsible for that; so too are its soaring alpine peaks, which captured the world’s imagination during the 1976 Winter Olympics in the provincial capital, Innsbruck. For many those peaks represent the archetypical Austrian landscape, but the Tyrol is far more than that. Steeped in culture, it is Austria’s third largest province and the only one split into two parts, North and East Tyrol. The sixth coin in our educational Austria Piece by Piece series, which was co-designed by the country’s school children, celebrates this enchanting land.

Have a look at this picture. It’s an eagle attacking a flightless bird called a moa. Now imagine that a six-foot tall human being barely comes up to the base of the Moa’s neck and you’ll get some idea of just how phenomenal the Haast’s Eagle truly was. This isn’t a Tweety that’s scared of Sylvester. It’s a Tweety that rips out Sylvesters throat and devours him piece by bloody piece.

Despite the coin series being named ‘Prehistoric Animals’, this death from the skies only went extinct around 600 years ago from it’s native New Zealand because the Maori stuck the Moa in the cooking pot. It just goes to prove that greed and stupidity aren’t confined to modern human history. We’ve been dumb and short-sighted for ages.

The coin itself is the second in the series, following on from the Smilodon, a huge saber-toothed cat. Ironically, that would’ve been the Sylvester to put the Haasts Eagle back in it’s place but it went extinct millenia before and thousands of miles away. Like the Smilodon release, the coin is limited to just a thousand pieces. It’s issued for Gabon, a first for Numiscollect, and unlike the first coin in the series that was issued for the Ivory Coast. Numiscollect make some nice coins and this series ranks amongst those. It’s a pity that they don’t go all in and make a 45mm, one-ounce, 0.999 silver version rather than this smaller 20g of 0.925 effort, but it’s nice regardless. Doesn’t quite show the sheer scale of this six-foot high bird, but it’s attractive and likely well-struck with quite a cool obverse. Available soon.

EAGLE HARPAGORNIS MOOREI

Haast’s Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) is an extinct species of eagle that once lived on the South Island of New Zealand, commonly accepted to be the Pouakai of Maori legend.[1] The species was the largest eagle known to have existed. Its prey is suspected to consist of moa. This eagle’s massive size may have been an evolutionary response to the size of its prey, as both would have been much smaller when they first came to the island, and would have grown larger over time due to lack of competition (see island gigantism). Haast’s Eagle became extinct around the year 1400, when its major food source, the moa, were hunted to virtual extinction by Maori, and much of its dense-forest habitat was cleared.
