Forming part of the European Series, that elected European Composers as the theme for 2014, the Portuguese coin pays homage to Marcos Portugal (1762–1830), one of the most prolific Portuguese composers ever.
Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal (1762–1830) was a Portuguese classical composer (over 70 dramatic works, including 40 operas, and more than 140 sacred works), who achieved great international fame for his operas in Italian.
This coin, created by sculptor Paula Lourenço, shows on its obverse the portrait of Marcos Portugal and on its reverse a lyre surrounded by laurel branches, symbolizing the greatness of his musical works.
