The second release in this special new series celebrating the unique bond between a mother and her offspring in the animal kingdom, features an Asian elephant and her calf.
Displaying a special connection, a mother Asian elephant and her calf move together among other related females and their young, under the direction of a matriarch. The elephant calf is born fully formed but is slow to mature. Requiring much care as it develops, its mother dedicates all of her time and love to her calf, and will only give birth again after her first born has been weaned. Highly protective, and ever conscious of her baby’s wellbeing, an Asian elephant mother will charge fiercely at any threat to her young calf.
The coin’s reverse depicts a coloured elephant calf locking trunks with its mother surrounded by jungle palms. The inscription ASIAN ELEPHANT and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also appear in the design.
Issued a legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the monetary denomination.

The Mint of Finland have unveiled a new coin which remembers the first modern Finnish currency, the Markkaa, and pays tribute to Finnish coin collectors. By decision of the Ministry of Finance, Mint of Finland will release a commemorative coin entitled ‘First Mark and Numismatics’ on 11 April. It is a homage to scholars and collectors of metal coins as well as commemorating the birth of Finland’s national currency. This is also the only Finnish gold coin to be struck in 2014.
The first Finnish mark was struck in silver at Mint of Finland on 15 October 1864. The obverse depicts the two-headed Russian eagle with the lion coat of arms of Finland on the shield at its centre. The oak leaves and decorative ribbon encircling the silver mark’s reverse are repeated on the new ‘First Mark and Numismatics’ collector coin.
“This gold coin reminds us of the importance that nations traditionally attach to metal coins. The messages in metal convey the values of their era across centuries, even millennia,” says Henna Karjalainen, Communications Director at Mint of Finland and in charge of commemorative coins.
The face value of the ‘First Mark and Numismatics’ commemorative coin is EUR 100. Packed in a handsome wood box, it will sell for EUR 440. Mint of Finland will also be striking a numbered special edition of the commemorative coin, packed in Vitriini glass cases designed by Iittala. The numbered gold coins will sell for EUR 600.
The coin, designed by artist Hannu Veijalainen, depicts on the obverse elements of the first design of the markkaa coin. The oak leaves and decorative ribbon encircling the face value of the silver marks originally seen on the reverse are replicated on the new First Mark and Numismatics collector coin. The text “NUMISMATIIKKA” can be seen along the upper rim. A similar and co-ordinated design is depicted on the reverse along with the text “SUOMI FINLAND” as well as the coin’s denomination of €100 and year of issue, 2014.

This coin features the image of resurrection of Jesus, where Jesus Christ miraculously returned to life on the Sunday following the Friday on which he was executed by crucifixion. The Resurrection of Jesus is the Christian belief that Jesus Christ miraculously returned to life on the Sunday following the Friday on which he was executed by crucifixion. It is the central tenet of Christian faith and theology and part of the Nicene Creed: "On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures".
In the New Testament, after the Romans crucify Jesus, he is anointed and buried in a new tomb by Joseph of Arimathea but God raises him from the dead and he appears to many people over a span of forty days before his ascension to Heaven, to sit at the Right Hand of God. Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday, the third day after Good Friday, the day of his crucifixion.
Easter's date corresponds roughly with Passover, the Jewish observance associated with the Exodus, that is fixed for the night of the Full moon near the time of the spring equinox.

The Royal Canadian Mint has launched two new commemorative coins which honor the upcoming canonization of His Holiness, the Late Pope John Paul II, who was considered one of the most beloved pontiffs in living memory – possibly of all pontiffs in the history of the 2000 year institution. The pure gold and pure silver collector coins were unveiled at ceremonies in Mississauga, Ontario and Saguenay, Quebec as well as the Canadian Embassy in Warsaw, Poland.
In 1984, Pope John Paul II became the first Pope to set foot on Canadian soil, when the papal aircraft landed at the airport in Quebec City. Already an accomplished traveler, the Pope was on his 24th pilgrimage. Wherever he went during his 12-day cross-Canada visit, great crowds flocked to him. Millions of Canadians, including many Indigenous people, turned out to greet the pontiff, pray with him and to celebrate, and many of them were deeply moved by his words and presence. Speaking in English and in French, Pope John Paul II delivered more than 30 major addresses as well as many other statements.
Pope John Paul II would return to Canada twice. In September 1987, he visited Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories. On the third and sadly, the last visit, he met with young people from around the world to celebrate World Youth Day 2002, in Toronto, Ontario. After a papal reign of just about 26 and a half years, the second longest for a pope, John Paul II died on the 2nd April 2005. John Paul II will be canonized on 27 April 2014, alongside Pope John XXIII, whose reign was between 1958 and 1963.
The reverse image on both coins reproduces a photograph of Pope John Paul II offering Mass during his first visit to Canada in 1984. Through the expert application of varied finishes and skilled engraving, Royal Canadian Mint engravers faithfully captured the power of the moment as the pope raises the Consecrated Host at the elevation. The obverse side features a portrait unique and distinct to the coins of Canada which was designed by Susanna Blunt and in use since 2003.
