2015 NEW YEAR COIN DIE FLEDERMAUS

2015 NEW YEAR COIN DIE FLEDERMAUS

2015 NEW YEAR COIN DIE FLEDERMAUS

Not just a time for celebrations and resolutions, New Year in Austria is also a time for giving gifts. This is no doubt why our New Year coins are among our most popular products. The traditional performance at the Vienna State Opera every New Year’s Eve, the operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is the theme of our charming New Year 2015 silver coin.
As befits a nation with such a rich musical heritage, classical music plays a vital role in the Austrians’ New Year celebrations. The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II is the first song played on the radio after the clock strikes midnight. Another of Strauss’s works, the operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is the theme of this charming 2015 New Year coin. The traditional performance at the Vienna State Opera every New Year’s Eve, the operetta is based around a masked ball which is orchestrated as an act of revenge by a character who was humiliated when drunkenly abandoned while dressed as a bat. The bat is shown above the seasonal glass of champagne of Rosalinde, one of the main characters, on the coin’s reverse. The nine-sided coin’s obverse shows the coats of arms of the nine federal provinces of Austria.

Gold ounce coin 50 NZD Gustav Fabergé proof

Gold ounce coin 50 NZD Gustav Fabergé proof

Gold ounce coin 50 NZD Gustav Fabergé proof

Czech Mint commemorates the great jeweller Gustav Fabergé and his legacy in a very original way – by a gold one-ounce coin denominated NZD 50 in proof quality. Gustav Fabergé was born in Pärn, Livonia (today Estonia) to a family of artists 200 years ago (1814). He apprenticed at Ferdinand Spiegel in Petersburg and worked for Wilhelm Keibel. After he qualified as a master he opened a Fabergé workshop in Petersburg. In 1842 he married the daughter of a Danish painter Charlotte Jungstedt with whom he had five children. In 1860 they moved to the town of Dresden and the firm in Russia was headed by his partner Hiskias Pendin and his oldest son Peter Carl Fabergé. The latter became famous in particular thanks to gold Easter eggs which he manufactured on a special order for the imperial family. About 50 pieces gold eggs were produced but fewer were preserved. The skilful craftsmanship, the materials used and the original opening hiding a surprise inside became a synonym for luxury and opulence.

A jewel in the shape of an Easter egg is one of things featured on the obverse of the gold coin. It was skilfully designed by young talented medal maker Asamat Baltaev. In the centre he placed the effigy of the British Queen Elizabeth II, there is also her name, the name of the issuer Niue Island and denomination of the coin 50 NZD. On the reverse we can see the portrait of Gustav Fabergé based on the painting of A. I. Perevyško. The splendid gold coin in an elegant leather case is numbered and the edition is limited to 200 pieces. Reserve a place for this fabulous piece of art in your collections; its purchase means a wise investment of your money. The current favourable prices of precious metals invite to invest in numismatic jewels now!

THIRD COIN IN CRYSTAL ARTS SERIES RAISES THE BAR YET AGAIN

We’ve repeatedly covered new coins in the art-architecture genre, and even as they continue to proliferate, they continue to improve in quality as well. One of the worlds premiere mints, the Mint of Poland, has dabbled with this subject several times before, most notably with its Crystal Arts series. Their latest release is the third coin in this annual series and follows on from the 2012 Secrets of Liechtenstein, and 2013 Mysteries of Wawel. The subject for 2014 is the Pena National Palace, a Romanticist building situated in São Pedro de Penaferrim, itself located in Sintra, Portugal.

As before, the coin is struck in two-ounces of antique-finish fine silver with a window inset with, in this case, Green Agate. This time around the mint has migrated the design of the coin to a CADCAM system called ArtCAM, also used by the Monnaie de Paris amongst others, and it seems to have allowed them to be more ambitious with the design. Whereas the first two coins in the series hit relief heights of 0.5-0.6mm, the Pena coin almost doubles that to 0.9-1.0mm. This gives the coin an impressive three-dimensional look, similar to the Helvetic Mints “Ultra High Relief” process that they use to great effect.

The coin is up for pre-order now at just a handful of dealers worldwide. US dealer First Coin Co. is doing an introductory offer of a 12% discount (enter code PENA12 at checkout). The coin will ship from January and has a mintage of just 688 pieces, down from the 999 of the first two coins. It is NOT available direct from the Mint of Poland.

The Pena National Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. SItuated on a hill above the town of Sintra, on a clear day it can be seen from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

A building of the Romanticism, incorporating an eclectic mix of Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic and Neo-Renaissance styles, it sits in over 200 hectares of forest called the Pena Park.

Built on the ruins of an old monastery damaged by lightning and a 1755 earthquake, work started in 1842 and concluded in 1854. A project of King Ferdinand, the palace was meant to be used by the Portuguese royal family as a summer retreat and was undertaken by an amateur German architect called Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege.

Parts of the original Hieronymite convent remain; the cloister, the dining room, the sacristy, and the Manueline-Renaissance chapel were all embedded in a new section that featured a wide terrace and a clock tower.

THIRD COIN IN CRYSTAL ARTS SERIES RAISES THE BAR YET AGAINArtCAM

Traditionally, coin designs have been sculpted in plaster, but as with most things, technology is gradually supplanting the age-old methods. The Mint of Poland is using ArtCAM, a CADCAM (Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing) package that covers the whole process from design through to fabrication of the dies used to strike the design in metal.

Also used by the Monnaie de Paris and Coin Invest Trust, this is certainly a fascinating way forward for intricate coin design, although we hope not one to fully supplant the traditional methods.

2015 Chinese Gold and Silver Panda Coins

Following last month’s design unveiling and initial release in China, the 2015 Gold and Silver Panda Coins are now making their way to the US market with many dealers taking orders for later delivery. This year’s releases are noted by the removal of the inscriptions indicating the weight, metal, and fineness.

2015 Chinese Gold and Silver Panda Coins

Following the typical format, the common obverse design across the coins features the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (The Temple of Heaven). The inscriptions within an outer ring include the title of the People’s Republic of China and the “2015” date.

The newly created reverse design shows a single panda eating a stalk of bamboo against a backdrop of bamboo. The only inscription is the denomination. As noted, there is no indication of the weight, metal, or fineness of the coin. All prior releases of the series since launch in 1983 have included this information on the reverse.

2015 Chinese Gold and Silver Panda Coins

The line up for the 2015 Panda coins remains the same as the prior year with seven different sizes in gold and three different sizes in silver. The gold options are struck in 99.9% purity and range in size from 1/20 oz to 1 kg. The silver options are struck in 99.9% purity and range from 1 oz to 1 kg.

Maximum mintage levels also remain the same as the prior year. The most popular 1 oz silver coin remains at 8,000,000 pieces and the 1 oz gold coin carrying a mintage of 1,000,000.

COLLECTOR COIN TO MARK THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF ÖDÖN LECHNER

Нe Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued a silver and a non-ferrous metal collector coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Ödön Lechner. The obverse of the commemorative coin bears a representation of the entrance hall of the Hungarian Geological and Geophysical Institute. The inscription on the lower edge of the obverse reads ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’, with the value numeral ‘10000’ and the inscription ‘FORINT’ placed above it, positioned slightly to the left. The mint mark ‘BP’ and the mint year ‘2014’ are positioned parallel to the right edge, fitted into the staircase.

The reverse of the collector coin bears a half-length portrait of Ödön Lechner, depicting the architect sitting in an armchair, with the representation of the Museum of Applied Arts in the background. On the upper edge, the coin is inscribed with ‘ÖDÖN LECHNER’. The inscriptions ‘1845’ and ‘1914’ are placed in two horizontal lines below the name, on the right. The initials of designer Mihály Fritz are on the right edge of the coin, above the armchair.

The standing rectangle shaped collector coin is struck in .925 fine silver. It weighs 31.46 grams and tis size is 39.6 x 26.4 mm, with a smooth edge. The non-ferrous metal version is made from an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. It weighs 22.5 grams and has the same diameter and the same coin design as the silver version.

From 2014, each precious metal commemorative coin will be issued in a less expensive non-ferrous metal version to benefit collectors who wish to buy the same artistic theme at a more affordable price. By issuing lower-priced versions, the MNB and the Hungarian Mint would also like to encourage younger generations to collect commemorative coins. Accordingly, the silver Lechner collector coin with a face value of HUF 10,000 and the non-ferrous metal coin with a face value of HUF 2,000 will be on sale at a price equal to their face value for three months from the date of issue and until stocks run out, respectively.
