This coin celebrates Yevhen Konovalets, a military leader and statesperson who symbolizes the continuity of Ukrainian liberation movements. Konovalets was a colonel of the Ukrainian People`s Republic Army, the first commander of the Ukrainian Military Organization, the head of the Ukrainian Nationalist Leading Body, and the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists – a political movement that aimed to create an independent Ukrainian state in all ethnic Ukrainian lands. He transformed the Sich military formation into the regiment of the Sich Riflemen, which was the most organized and disciplined unit of the Ukrainian People`s Republic Army.
Obverse: to the left is a guelder rose branch, against the backdrop of which is Ukraine`s small coat of arms (above), to the right of the coat of arms is the legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine); in the center, against a smooth background is a phaleristics sign in the form of a monogram consisting of two letters “С” entwined with a red guelder rose branch – the Riflemen Council military decoration awarded by an advisory body under the Sich Riflemen commander Yevhen Konovalets in 1918 – 1919; to the right of the decoration is the following quote by Konovalets: …БУДЕМО/ МАТИ СИЛУ,/ ТОДІ ВИЙДЕМО/ ПОБІДНО/ З НАЙГІРШОГО/ ЛИХОЛІТТЯ/ І ЗДОБУДЕМО/ ВСЕ, ЩО НАМ/ ТРЕБА. (If we are strong, then we’ll be able to emerge victorious from the greatest misfortune and win everything that we need.), and his facsimile; beneath are the coin`s face value 2 ГРИВНІ (2 hryvnias) and issue year 2021; to the left of the military decoration is the mint mark of the NBU`s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: against a smooth background is a stylized portrait of Yevhen Konovalets, to the left of which are the legend ОУН (OUN) and a stylized trident with a sword; to the right is the semicircular legend ЄВГЕН КОНОВАЛЕЦЬ (Yevhen Konovalets); beneath are the years of Konovalets’ birth and death 1891 – 1938.
